LINK Log

7:29 PM
Day 1:
Today I began my internship for the LINK program. My internship is with Roxy McKnight and I will be studying the arts by reading a book by Don Miguel Ruiz called The Four Agreements. Following the reading I will be composing an art piece regarding the book. During the duration of the LINK program I will also use some of this time to focus on catching up in school. Today I began reading- I read approximately 30 pages, annotated the first parts of the novel, and then created a 'preliminary'. A 'preliminary' is a quick sketch or drawing of a possible idea for an art piece. After I finished the preliminary and the reading I did some work in math class to make up for my recent illness and extended absence because of my vacation.
Day 2:
Today Roxy and I met and had a discussion regarding the first chapter of the book. We talked a lot about the concept of the 'mitote' and how it can affect an individual. The 'mitote' is a term in ancient Toltec knowledge that refers to the chaos of our own minds and lives as we know them. I am making an effort to put this knowledge to my own life as to truly attain the essence of this project. I also did some school work for math class.
Day 3:
Today I continued reading my book and started the first chapter focused on one specific agreement. This agreement is Being Impeccable With Your Word. I studied and annotated this chapter and reflected with some jot-dots and a preliminary based on the phrase, "…. Using the word against another is using the word against yourself," (pg.31). I also focused on math work and chemistry work.
Day 4:
Today I was sick. But I continued reading The Four Agreements and finished my chapter on Being Impeccable with your word. I studied some chemical reactions knowledge requirements for chemistry class. I researched 'transcendence' and its role in philosophy.
Day 5:
Today was Monday March 9th. Today my mentor was sick so I focused a lot on catching up on regular school work. I have been focused a lot on math class and the project that I have not completed. I also met with my chemistry teacher, Steve Smith, and he helped me with some chemical reactions questions and we scheduled a test to make up on Wednesday.
Day 6:
Tuesday March 10th and today was good. I conferenced with Jessica about The Four Agreements and she talked to me about her experience with the novel and the impact it made on her life. Today I also worked with Steve on finishing some Chemistry work from the past that I failed to complete. I also worked on my Happiness and Meaning project painting. I hope to finish it by the end of the week.
Day 7:
Today was Wednesday, March 11th. Roxy and I met all of fifth period and then some and we had a great conference regarding the recent chapters in the book. Roxy also helped critique my painting for Happiness and Meaning project. Being that Roxy is a talented artist, I value what she has to say about my art and how I could improve it. I plan to finish the novel and start my project for the LINK exhibition by the beginning of next week.
Day 8:
Today, Thursday March 12th I spent a great deal of time of math work from the past. I studied for about 45 minutes and then completed the Chapter 5 test. I am confident that I did okay on the test. Aside from the math work, I spent a lot of time of my art and reflecting on the ideas that have manifested in my mind while reading the book The Four Agreements .
Day 9:
Today was Friday March 13th and I worked hard to finish my Happiness and Meaning project. I am really pleased with the way that it turned and out and I am very happy with the grade Ashley gave me for my art piece. In addition, I read the book for about 30 minutes to 45 minutes and completed annotations, as usual. The annotations help me process the text more and keeps my mind moving.
Day 10:
Today was March 16th and this is the last week of my internship. It seems like it has been flying by. I have really been enjoying this artistic journey that I'm on and the guidance provided by Roxy and Jessica. I received back my grade from math test last week and I got an A which is pretty cool for me because generally I struggle in math more than most other classes.
Day 11:
Tuesday March 17th and I still brainstorming an idea for my final project. I want this to express my view and perspective and I always want my art to mean something so I am trying not to rush it. However, I am about done with the book so perhaps an idea will arise within the next day or so. I have really enjoyed The Four Agreements and I aim to put these concepts to my own life.
Day 12:
Wednesday March 18th. Today I did a whole entire math project. Christy say she was proud of me and that it looked like some of best work all semester. I am particularly proud of myself for catching up on math during this 3 week opportunity. I also decided what my LINK project is going to look like and I am stoked to complete this painting.
Day 13:
Thursday March 19th and there is only one more day of internships. I am somewhat sad because I definitely benefited from this experience and I know that it helped me grow as a person, an artist, and a student. My final project is going to depict a Buddhist figure within a tree. To me, it represents how everything is interconnected. There is also a large focus on energy in the piece.
Day 14:
It is the last day of my internship. I am happy to be going on spring break but I will miss the "artist lifestyle" more than anything. I am about halfway done with my art piece for the LINK exhibition and I am confident that it will be done on time. I am very hopeful that I am able to practice The Four Agreements and also that I will continue to make art that speaks, at least to me.
Weekly/ LINK Reflection:
Wow! What an experience. I cannot express how thankful I am for this opportunity. I know that have grown as person due to the reading I completed and the reflections I did. In addition, by having a talented artist as my mentor, I definitely grew as an artist. Roxy's feedback on my technique and art process was very helpful in developing my skills as an artist. Lastly, due to how much time I had to make up for lost time and work, I have grown as a student. I gained the perspective that it's best to buckle down.
Project Proposal-
This journey to secure an internship for my LINK experience has been full of obstacles. But alas, I have secure an internship with Roxy McKnight. Roxy is a teacher here at AHS; she has extensive knowledge and experience regarding the fine arts and she has accepted me for the 3 week duration of LINK. I am hopeful and sure that Roxy is more than capable of improving my knowledge in the fine arts. I also hope to improve my character through the novel we plan to read, The Four Agreements. This internship will benefit my life in the real world through the development of my artistic skills and who I am as a person in our AHS community via the reading (The Four Agreements).
I am stoked about my project because it will be super beneficial for me to have someone with such extensive experience with art who can help me develop myself as an artist. To complete this art piece I will first be reading a novel with Roxy. This book is called The Four Agreements and the book offers a philosophical view on how to carry oneself on a day-to-day basis.
To be ready for the LINK exhibition I will work hard over the 3 week duration. I aim to express my ideals regarding the reading through my art piece. The process will be long, ‘working’ process in which I will have to persevere struggles I come upon during my artwork as well as conflicts that may appear while I read the novel. The conflicts that could relate to the novel mostly entails a conflict between the novel’s philosophy and my own beliefs.
I am excited for this internship. Roxy and I seem to work well together and I am excited to see what sort insight she has to offer regarding my art process. I am sure that it will be a one of a kind experience and I am glad I have found the ability to finally embrace this experience.
